Played golf with a Canberra public servant the other day. He had taken twelve months leave from employment as his wife was coming to our town to work in the art gallery. I asked him what he had done over the twelve months (he is about to return to Canberra). "One of the best years of my life." he said. "Working as a volunteer with the Salvos helping out the down and outers."
Yeah a bludging no-conscience public servant. Different priorities to some. And, looking wider, you can bet that he did not do it as a public relations exercise.
