Thalweg, the way I do it is:

1. Select the colum you want to sort by clicking on the column's letter (A, B, .....AA, etc). The whole comlum should be highlighted.

2. In the ribbon, click "Sort and Filter", then "A-Z" or "Oldest to Newest" or whatever you want.

3. A little box will come up. Leave "Expand the selection" selected, and click "Sort".

Custom sorts are onty required if you want to sort by more than one column.
