Perseus Mining's new boss Jeff Quartermaine after second Africa gold stream
A single-mine profile leaves the company heavily exposed, as shown by the recent sell-off after the Edikan problems.
A broader production base offers far more insulation from operational hiccups as well as the sovereign risk issues that can arise from time to time in the region.
"We are fairly vulnerable as a one-mine company at the moment," Quartermaine says. "We would like to have two income streams."
"My view is that West Africa is sufficiently volatile that you absolutely cannot rely on a single income stream. We'd be more comfortable if we had a second one but it'd be even more reliable if we had three. Then you can ride out the various ups and downs that you experience in the business."
Beyond Sissingue, Quartermaine and his team are also keeping a close eye out for opportunities that could eventually support the company's third West African mine.
