The government gets so much revenue through taxing smokers as it is, really pretty stupid for them to just keep driving it up.

52 x $63 = $3276 pa

3.5M smokers = $1,1466,000,000

Governments take out of that is already a pretty hefty take

Despite all the slogans for smokers to QUIT - do you really think the government wants to loose that kind of cash injection ?

I remember when it used to be used as an inspiration to quit you'd save a life sum of $30k - these days it's $30K+ every 10 years.


On the growing tobacco thing I do recall it is dealt pretty heavily as someone mentioned it's got to do with excise and tax evasion.
