I understand your reasoning, im pretty sure you dont do the unit change, its already factored into the numbers
Q in ft.lbs is equal to the right hand side of the equation
and it has been stated what those units are on the right side of the equation
the equation is what it is, sure its unconventional, but its probably done this way because you are dealing with a drill pipe tube and they probably have standard measurements
