yep its getting interesting in SA coal space.

ive always felt there is a massive consolidation game to play there. UNV, CCC, Keaton, Exarro, Xstrata (who are growing), Firestone CZA....

the coal fields are like a checkerboard of small to mid producers (and the odd big one) and as we know, scale is one of the key elements.

people bang on about potential strikes...yet ignore the mad unions in Oz (BHP/Mitsui dispute, Waratah coal terminal strikes) + crippling wages + carbon +mining taxes...

is it any wonder there are basically no new mines being built (other than those already U/C or brownfield expansions)

i read in The Australian last week that China will impose a ban of sorts on low KCal (4500 i think) coal from being imported.

apparently this would have a significant effect on indo coal.

pretty confident the massive structural coal deficits in India haven't been addressed...we are taking 100's of Mt over the next decade.

whilst India Inc probably regrets buying overpriced, expensive and stranded coal assets in QLD/WA the next round of investment will be in in SA. they have been taking for years about it and not done a single transaction.

Mozambique turned out to be a partial dud and the same for Mongolia.

ill be intrigued as to UNV's next move..reckon we in a good situation and projects the right ones. As hard as it is, need to put the SP on "ignore" as it just doesn't reflect the real price.
