Australia's Origin Energy is preparing to spud an exploration well on the Whale prospect on Block 121, off the coast of Vietnam.
Joint venture partner Pan Pacific Petroleum said the semi-submersible drilling rig Ocean General was on tow to the block and was expected to spud the Ca Voi-1X well during the first week of June.
The Ca Voi, or Whale, prospect has been estimated hold between 40 million and 200 million barrels of oil.
Block 121 covers about 8000 square kilometres over the northern portion of the Phu Khanh basin, adjacent to the Vietnam coastline.
Origin operates the block with a 45% stake, UK Independent Premier Oil holds 40% and Pan Pacific holds the remaining 15% interest.
