They measure historic pH levels by the boron isotope ratios within the carbonate shells of organisms trapped in sediments in the ocean. They can measure the pH going back millions of years (4 decimal places might be a stretch, probably some over enthusiastic researcher). They hadn't invented pH back millions of years ago either.
This science thing is most inconvenient, especially when it contradicts things that you "feel" must be right.
