It's easy enough to identify the problems but the solutions are more complex. The sad reality in Adelaide is that we lose one person a day to suicide. How can alcohol dependence and its complications be prevented? Many suicide cases are due to complicated grief, depression and substance addiction.
Here are my suggestions on protective factors:
Every individual has access to quality education and training that leads to sustainable employment More counselling services to support those with addiction and related issues More community social events that are alcohol free.
It also concerns me that our young people are being inducted into a big alcohol culture in Australia. How is it that we are bombarded with alcohol commercials during televised sporting events?
By the way I am Indigenous and I choose not to drink.
