Sir Joh's son says Qld 'shafting' regions

"JOHN Bjelke-Petersen, the son of former Queensland premier Sir Joh, has accused the Liberal National Party leadership of "shafting" the regions as he quit the state's governing party.

The failed political candidate says he is open to the idea of joining mining magnate Clive Palmer's fledgling party, but he hasn't spoken yet to maverick federal MP Bob Katter.

He accused LNP premier Campbell Newman of disregarding the bush.

"As far as the rural and regional areas are concerned, we have been shafted," he told AAP.

"I'm sure my father wouldn't have been impressed with the way things are, and the way in which things are handled."

Mr Palmer, who quit the LNP last year, said it was news to him that his mate had quit Queensland's governing party.

"He's a friend of mine. I speak to him on many occasions, but I don't think there's an announcement to be made," he told AAP.

Asked if he'd like to recruit his friend for Palmer's United Party, he said, "I'll have to wait to have a chat to him."

But Mr Bjelke-Petersen, who ran unsuccessfully for his father's old seat of Nanango northwest of Brisbane in 2006 and 2009, said he was open to the idea of joining Mr Palmer's party.

"Soon enough, you'll know where I'm heading. It'll all come out in the wash," he said.

Liberal National Party Queensland director Brad Henderson said Mr Bjelke-Petersen's resignation was "not at all" damaging.

Speaking to reporters, he denied the LNP had become focused on the cities.

Last year, Mr Bjelke-Petersen toyed with the idea of challenging Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney in his central Queensland seat of Callide.

His father Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen was Queensland premier from August 1968 to December 1987, and his mother Florence was a Queensland senator from 1981 to 1993"
