I'm not accusing you of prejudice. You correctly defined the problem and it's equally prevalent among all classes, races and incomes.
I was describing the remedy, the only one that works. But AA only works when sufferer has a desire to stop drinking. Most don't until the onset of extreme difficulties. Most want to drink nicely or to take a pill that will cure them.
Many die in the quest for a Non-God solution. They prefer an appointment with the undertaker to going to AA.
There's not much anybody can do about contempt prior to checking out how AA works. Some let the Gates of Insanity close with them on the inside - to checking out the only remedy that works.
Alcoholism is the only malady that kids the sufferer he or she doesn't have it while everybody else does see that he or she is an alcoholic.
