Rudd doesn't want the leadership now, why would he want to take over and let Gillard off the hook??
Exactly right. Rudd has the leadership in the bag once Gillard and her merry band of loyal supporters retire or are thrown out of their seats at the next election.
Labor have no-one else of leadership capacity (term used loosely) in the ranks.
