I'd be surprised if Rudd has given up what seemed at one stage to be his dream of a cushy UN posting...
I would guess that these last few months of the failed and toxic labor/union-boss/green socialist alliance are Rudd's last chance at using the influence of the current government to secure him something at the UN...
Rudd could be just going for the strategy of being sooo much of a nuisence to Gillard that she throws him that UN bone to get rid of him...
