From memory, SLR actually isn't that shorted. I checked the ASIC site recently and it was only a small amount.
Total trades for the day were 73m shares which accounts for more than 19% of the register. While some of that will be day traders and HFT playing with themselves that is still some serious action.
Would be interested to know who the sellers are as there aren't many large holders. Someone suggested index funds re-weighting in anticipation of a re-balance - that certainly sounds plausible.
More interested in the buyers though. There were some big buyers at the close - would be very surprised if there aren't some new substantial shareholders in the next few days.
