Just read the posts, thanks for not getting into the political side of this problem.

Birdman the submission by Anthony Sheldon, I can see where he is coming from re the $20 a day pay. I assume the fisherman is only looking at a small time in custody before being repatriated back to Indonesia. 15 years might make them think again, then again maybe not. I don't know, maybe remove the daily payment if this is the carrot.

Chuck, respect your opinion. Re the identity..... as mentioned above I don't think too many fishermen would speak Arabic, Sri Lankan or another foreign language, yes they can mix with the refugee but it would only be a matter of time, days and their identity would be revealed.

Deltafish, good point but this is about the boat people, at least the person arriving by air has a passport, the authorities know who he or she is.

NickJ, I agree with your recruitment comment, getting onto a crowded boat would be a clue what's ahead.

Pintohoo, it's political alright, that's why I posted an option. Agree, unless our politicians get fair dinkum this problem will escalate.

John435, guess you have hit the nail on the head, one big problem that's not going to be easy to overcome.

I'm not anti refugee, but these boats are illegal, our borders are not secure, I'm sure we are getting a few radical Muslims arriving on our shores. The cost to the taxpayer is horrendous, our personal involved, Navy, Airforce, Customs, Immigration and so many other departments, really, can we afford having so many personal dealing with this one problem.

Maybe the Govt. should cut out the family repatriation scheme. We are all lucky we live in a democratic country like Australia, easy to look at the world through rose coloured glasses, I've seen a little of what's on the other side, don't blame anyone for wanting a better life, but, Australia must control her borders.
