DTrads 'solution' is refugees and boat crews get
a mandatory sentence by a Government Clerk.

Really, well you are very wrong. I'm suggesting a deterrent for crew members only. The mandatory sentence is a deterrent, I'd be horrified if a “Govt Clerk” had the authority to imprison people, so that is plainly your take on it, not mine. The courts would determine guilt and impose the sentence if guilty. The rest of your post, Graham, I would be confident not one person reading or contributing would even contemplate what you wrote.

The cost of keeping person in detention is certainly high, however if the threat to imprison a person for 10-15 years works and the boats stop, very low cost to the taxpayer. You appear to have lost the point of my suggestion.

The people arriving on boats have paid around US $10,000 each, the real scum are the people smuggler,s lets not forget this. The Australian taxpayer is very generous by comparison, so those of you who criticise need to get this into your head. The queue jumper so called “economic refugee “is in my opinion keeping the genuine refugee in detention camps in other countries.
