Thanks nomore for the map and the detail you have shown. Thats a very good effort. It just shows the conplexity of evryone going their own way with rail.
I don't think FMG rail is double track for its total length.
A double track is far more efficient than a single track with passing loops and bi-directional signalling. With a double track the only constraint is loading/unloading facilities as you can run trains with 30min or 45min headways as long as they can be loaded or unloaded in time for the next train.
Double track also allows faster average travel times (80kph) compared with the need to slow a 15000 tonne train into a passing loop and maybe wait for the train coming from the opposite direction.
My basic calculations suggest a double track network with 45min headways should be able to move about 160million tonnes per year.
So if Aurizon comes into the picture and wants to maximize efficiency with a double track network they will be looking for more than just Brockman and Flinders to make up the tonnage.
