howdy, Sy,
I dont think a few metres would make much difference. If you had a 50 metre drop just short of the runway, your headwind could become a downdraught at that point and affect you.
It CAN be difficult to judge height over water, at times, but the crew would have been using the end of the runway for height reference, and they had radar altimeters.
A post by Muzzarati says they declared an emergency prior to impact, so they may have had a power problem? Getting down to 85 kts even with a slight headwind, beats me how they were flying. It will all come out eventually, but expect some coverups with the new & controversial 777.....too many $$$$ at stake. What concerns me is that the roof/ceiling appears to be rather inflammable?
