I remember numerous folks disagreeing with me when years ago I pointed out that the heavily paper short banksters didn't start the GLD ETF with the aim of increasing the physical demand for gold nor with the aim of encouraging ordinary folks to have a safe and simple way of investing in physical gold.

Now we're regularly seeing articles suggesting how the banksters have used the GLD ETF to suppress the price of gold.
