The last on my part on the CPI issue.
The CPI is a series of indexes
The main CPI series are:
• CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U)
• Chained CPI for All Urban Consumers (C-CPI-U)
• CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers iCPI-Wj
The CPI for All Urban Consumers, or CPI-U. which BLS began publishing in January 1978. represents the buying habits of the residents of urban or metropolitan areas in the United States.
The CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W, the oldest of the series, covers a subset of the urban population.
The Chained CPI for ALL Urban Consumers begun appearing in 2002.
Question. To which of the three main CPI indexes do we commonly refer as the CPI ?
I not sure, but on the basis of all info so far gathered I would say the CPI-U.
Now, let’s go back to a previous post of mine with a link to ‘rationalwik’, and interestingly what one can read there is this:
“Williams posts older statistics that have fallen out of favor by governmental agencies stating that they are being suppressed by the government to make the economy look better. This ignores the fact that these measures are still calculated and published”
And indeed that is the case:
“The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) is a continuation of the historical index that was introduced after World War I for use in wage negotiation.”
I repeat , “The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) is a continuation of the historical index that was introduced after World War I for use in wage negotiation. Link bellow.
YES the old CPI is still being published.
I hope that this is enough to show Mr. Williams' lack of honesty as well as your lack of perspective over what is going on.

PS. Note that when the methodology changes a new index is created, as it should.
