Between 300 and 500 detainees have escaped and there are reports that 15 guards have been injured, including a local police officer. The Immigration Department says it cannot say what started the disruption.

Today I took a Chinese uni student on his first day in Canberra - to the Australia War Memorial to see the closing ceremony at 5.00 pm of a bugler playing the Last Post in honour of our war heroes.
