Christianity was in a dark age at some time for a while, but they did inherit the Roman Empire and that also gave them an immense of wealth and knowledge to create not only the dark ages but territories to defend, colonise and to take back. Christianity has a different history as we may well know and the Roman Empire has yet not ended.
