The giant Freeport Cu-Au Grasberg mine in Indonesia plans to start mining underground using block cave methods at a rate of 160,000 metric tonnes per day (which is equivalent to 58.4 million metric tonnes per year).
Staggering for an underground mine. At that mining rate they could mine the entire 187 million tonne inferred resource at Kitumba in 3.2 years.
Unfortunately if the mines in the article come to fruition some will be BTR's competitors in the Cu market in the future.
