I understand where you are coming from - leave it to the lesser of two evils (Assad) to do the deed - and it will have less impact on Australia and the rest of the world.
While the principle sounds nice, this is what has led us to the current situation. Things had already bubbled their way to the surface.

The cleansing committed by Assad Snr and Jnr over the last 2+ decades, left unchecked, was resulting in the oppressed (the more radicals), leaving Syria and claiming refugee status in other countries and ultimately in places like Australia.
If you boil water in a pressure cooker without a release valve, you end up with an explosion - and this is where we are at.
The problem we have is akin to two different surgeons with two different approaches to clearing up an infection (being the Muslim problem).
- leave the boil to itself and it will go away (the Russian approach)
versus
- jump in and lance the boil (the US approach)
Sometimes you need to lance a boil before the infection goes otherwise the infection will spread.
The US and Russians need to go in together, try to come up with an agreed upon puppet govt that will not put up with shit and yet at the same time is fair - easier said than done.
