I would not regard it as some kind of ingenious plan by any means.
You cannot prevent suicidal people from causing major attacks and taking other lives if that is their wish....kamikaze pilots WW2, suicide bombers etc...
Still, it is curious that the male passengers aboard those planes were not able to overpower the terrorists who were "only" armed with knives/boxcutters.
