The other possibility that hasn't been mentioned is that the kick may just be overpressured fluid (ie. pore waters). If the structures are highly compartmentalised or undercompacted you could possibly get high sustainable pressures. I believe that's what happened at that Indonesian mud volcano..caused by drilling into an overpressured reservoir. Overpressure by itself does mean gas...I think that's why people are not jumping all over this...
