IBRAHIM Siddiq-Conlon, a Muslim convert who has argued for the imposition of sharia law in Australia, has been charged with making a hoax terrorist threat after he allegedly threatened to "wear some TNT" to Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Mr Siddiq-Conlon, who is behind the controversial organisation Sharia4Australia, has also been charged with child pornography offences after police allegedly found a number of illegal images on his home computer.

The western Sydney man yesterday declined to say if he was guilty of the pornography charges, which he admitted would attract "some minor punishment" under sharia law if he were found guilty.

"It might be a lashing, it might be jail, it might be a fine," Mr Siddiq-Conlon said.

Salim Farrar, an expert in sharia law at Sydney University, said pornography was forbidden under Islamic law, although most jurisdictions made no distinction between adult and child material.

Dr Farrar said pornography was a discretionary, rather than hudud or traditional offence, such as adultery or theft, meaning punishments could vary.

"It's unlikely to be a fine because fines are not part of the sharia system," Dr Farrar said. "But it could be corporal punishment. Whatever punishment he would get, it would be less than the hudud offences."

Australian Federal Police charged the confessed hater of democracy last month.

He was charged with using a carriage service to issue a hoax terrorist threat, possessing child-abuse material, and using a carriage service to access child pornography.

Mr Siddiq-Conlon did not enter a plea when he appeared at Burwood Local Court in Sydney's inner west yesterday and was released from the court on bail.

Mr Siddiq-Conlon, who was raised a Christian, converted to Islam after travelling overseas and marrying an Indonesian woman. Sharia4Australia was formed in southwest Sydney to advocate for sharia courts and eventual total Islamic rule.

Under his bail conditions, Mr Siddiq-Conlon must reside at his parents' address in Cowra, 310km west of Sydney. His next court appearance was set down for May 8 at the Downing Centre Local Court. in central Sydney.

    ------

He is an idiot, but an idiot with followers and this makes him dangerous. He is a great example of someone who should be sent packing by his community, because he is (according to some), not representing the wider Islamic view. However, the community does nothing about him.

Islam clearly has no formal structure that can deal with preachers like this fool, who preach against the so called common view - I guess this is because there is no common view.
