It took more than 2 weeks to free the Africans of slavery, many years, a very dark era for humanity. Hangings were wide spread too.
As the world becomes more civilised an increasing number of cultures will view hangings as barbaric and backward too, there are alternatives. I guess if people are not taught alternatives and sympathy rather apathy and compliance to keep the insecure state safe like a 18th century trading port, the island of culture will remain.
I think it will take Singapore many years for it to relax its stance and govt media gags and in a way to not lose face.
