Bhp have carried out some exploration in Liberia over the last few years but I'm pretty sure they don't have any operating mines and I don't even think they are actively exploring at the moment.
Arcelor Mittal are in the construction phase and planning to export from the port of Buchanan which is south of Monrovia. The Canadian engineering consultants Amec are the epcm service providers for some if the works and are flying engineers in from Canada. I've considered going to work over there for a while so keeping an eye on the proceedings but I'm also spoilt on the green pastures of the WA resource industry so I'll keep chewing here for a while longer unless something really good comes up.
I'll check out that YouTube video but its easy to form an unbalanced view of the country from videos like that - its just as easy for West Africans to think Australia is dangerous after watching snowtown! I didn't get into any situations whilst I was there where I felt threatened - the biggest risk like most places is on the roads - their road stats are terrible and as I write my brother in law is recovering from a road accident in JFK hospital over there.
Anyway I think I'll take the time to go to the AGM in a few weeks time - anyone else going?
