re: olivier what have we so far, we have sands Hi Butcherano,
You are correct - broadly speaking. When a kick is detected, the BOPs are shut in to prevent a blow out. The well is brought under control by increasing the mud weight and then kick fluid is then circulated out.
I haven't done the calculations, but if there was gas at the bottom of the well, the integrity of the cement bond at the casing shoe would be threatened. An experienced operator would plug back and sidetrack the well (perhaps) and avoid a lengthy logging program.
I am reasonably certain that the kick is oil ( I may be proven wrong). However, there would be some gas associated with the oil.
On the matter of column height, I would suspect possibly 3 stacked, separate columns, each with a column height of around 250 metres ( only guessing/hoping!).
Cheers,
Oli
