Looks like I may be the lone voice here. You can have science and religion appear to be complementary but only by butchering and distorting the definition of the word 'science'
Attempts by religious folks to 'reconcile' with science or claim a congruence or harmony with science are merely a result of religious groups deeply wanting to have the respect that science gets without actually having to perform any science or think in scientifically critical terms. When anyone tells me about this complementary relationship, I just ask them to describe to me in any sort of detail "what is the scientific method". Without googling it, none of them can do it. If someone claims to be a scientist and a Xtian, it just means they ain't doing the science right.
When wafflehead tells us that religion is an essential part of our social fabric and will take us beyond todays mess, I literally shudder. It stands squarely between us and the dignity of which our species is potentially capable.
