I was very young when the robbery took place, and it was on the news for weeks. I remember the public outcry that the queens mail train had been robbed and all this money had been stolen. I think the reason he was so infamous was because he escaped from a high security jail and fled to Australia to be later joined by his wife and children. He fled from Aus and surfaced in Rio, where he lived the life of a minor celebrity. He gave himself up and returned to England and spent 8 years in prison. He was released on compassionate grounds and died in a nursing home. The only reason he gave himself up was because he needed medical care, and was unable to receive it in Rio, for whatever reason. I felt sorry for his then wife Charmaine and their young children. They say that to this day 5 men who took part in that robbery have never been charged.
