Sorry to give it away for anyone still attempting it.
This is how I got there...
7+2 = 63 (9) where 63 /9 = 7
6+5 = 66 (11); 66/11 = 6
8+4 = 96 (12); 96/12 = 8
9+7 = X (16); X /16 = ?
following on from the sequence of the earlier eqns. ? = 9
solving for X
16 * 9 = X
As I am pretty much mathematically incompetent, I was surprised to be able to solve it at all, which leads me to believe that some genius somewhere is just having a laugh at our expense.
