The views on this forum aren't much chop for determining the fairness or otherwise of any organisation that dispenses news. Its too polarised so you get the inevitable result based on that polarisation.
The views expressed here are where the bias one way or the other appears quite extreme. So basically any discussion on the ABC here is just a case of peeing in the wind.
It doesn't stop at the ABC either. Some vehemently believe the Murdoch media is biassed one way while others reckon Fairfax is biassed another way.
Its just a sham of a discussion on this politics forum. Even former Liberal leader and current senior Cabinet Minister Malcolm Turnbull, is tagged here by the usual culprits as being a lefty and they say he should be leading the Labor Party. LOL they say this about the man who could still become the next Liberal Prime Minister of this country.
IMO the only threat to the ABC is an ideological one, based on the desire of a minority on the conservative side of politics wanting to privatise everything. Certainly they would be nudged along by private media that would gain from such a move. To do it though would be seen as political opportunism by selling out to the media moguls that would then be expected to favour the government that provided that largesse to them.
Maybe I am naive but the ABC is about as Australian as you can get and I don't believe any government would contemplate its demise. Its always been here and mainly operated under Coalition governments. The fact that governments change in itself is a pressure to basically prevent the institution from blatantly favouring any one side. Mistakes will be made but there is recourse to remedy those as occurs from time to time.
