Some good advice their Sam already.. my only advice is to do the research, do your DD, see yourself as a stakeholder/owner of the business, look for undervalued companies that the market has mispriced and when you are completely satisfied invest as per your investment strategy. Have an out strategy and stay away from DT as long as you can...plenty of DT's out there that just want your money.
Theres probably a few more things but keep in mind that share investing is just like punting.
