Really Australia was a bit of a backwater in the early days. Hardship and suffering for all. It wasnt until much later that Australia really came into it its own particularly after WW2 when huge migration took place from many countries.

Australia then started to benefit from the diversity of skills that were brought into Australia and bit by bit it became the prosperous, relatively secure country it is today. The big plus from the past was the introduction of democracy and the Westminster system of Parliament. Watershed moments were when women were finally granted a Commonwealth vote in 1902. The AEC tells us that constitutionally indigenous Australians had the right to vote from 1895 but in practice it did not occur that way. All barriers were removed in 1962 when the Menzies government legislated the vote for all indigenous Australians.

Really the nation we have evolved into, is imo predominately the work of more recent generations and I have no doubt that future generations will also make further positive changes and improvements and create an even better Australia.

    cheers
