It should have nothing to do with the bashing.
The guy was informed, and had the documentation to prove as much, that his visa expired in March 2014.
Someone's goofed somewhere, be the real expiry March 2013 or March 2014.
He should at least be allowed to get his affairs in order and reapply for another visa, which he was probably intending to do.
And yep the perps have been caught and sentenced. 10 years and 4 years.
