New UK plan to support decentralised power generation, energy savings

As part of a plan to encourage decentralised power generation and energy savings, the UK’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) today revealed a new Community Energy Strategy.

Under the new plan, the government has established a £10 million (US$16.5 million) Urban Community Energy Fund aimed at kick-starting community power generation projects in England; a £1 million ($1.65 million) Big Energy Saving Network fund to support the work of volunteers helping vulnerable consumers to reduce their energy consumption; and a community energy saving competition, offering £100,000 ($165,000) to communities to develop innovative approaches to saving energy and money.

DECC has also established a ‘one-stop shop’ information resource for people interested in developing community energy projects.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker said the government ‘is determined to … drive forward the decentralised energy revolution. We want to help more consumers of energy to become producers of energy and in doing so help to break the grip of the dominant big energy companies.’
