I think the spread of the internet is partly to blame. The sort of pseudo science rantings spouted by climate change and vaccine deniers would not have got the light of day when it cost money to publish books. But with the internet, the sort of gullible people that used to get sucked in by gambling scams or religious cults now read the pseudo science on some blog and assume it is as valid as decades of peer reviewed science. An unfortunate dumbing down of society.
