Palermo, capital of Sicily, has a single set of traffic lights, outside the prison. Naples has roundabouts and the odd set of traffic lights, but the only pedestrians who get to cross the road reasonably safely are younger women pushing a pram. Took us an hour and a half to get past a single roundabout, so 'strangely enough', we decided not to stop in at all. Nobody takes any notice of the law in Southern Italy.
Regarding our overly keen roads and traffic people, perhaps they ought to realize that the more traffic lights they install, the worse the congestion seems to get. Then they add 50km speed zones where they are unnecessary and fill the area with police catching 'speeding' motorists. Of course in the Eastern suburbs, where the power-brokers tend to reside, the speed limits are far more generous, along with a number of toll roads to get the traffic out of the streets.
