Fukushima Reactors had passed their used by date, but the Japanese are a bit short on funds to decommission and replace them.
Even so, it was their location that was the problem, more so than the 40 year old reactor.
IMO, if the fail safe didn't shut down reactor, it would still send power to the water pumps to cool it, and their would be no problem..
Again Location of backup diesel gensets where they could be wiped out by tsunami was another costly error.
The reactor wasn't the problem, it was it location.
I would like to see a floating nuclear reactor moored offshore Fukushima safe from earthquakes and tsunamis.
Don't ask the cost of safety. disaster is always a lot more.
In hindsight, Japan would have been cheaper to decommission and replace the reactor as required.
Building Tsunami walls was admitting there was a real threat, and Reactor should not have been built there.
