That's not the mechanism. Gas fills the lower traps first since it is lighter than the oil. Oil cannot displace the trapped gas so migrates to the next higher trap. Any further gas generated at the source will displace any trapped oil in lower traps. The final/highest trap will either be all oil or gas/oil combination. Have a think about it; it is obvious to this oil geologist.
