Newcrest has already drawn the attention of traders. Its shares are up more than 10 per cent this week, ahead of the company’s half-year results on Friday. There should be little surprises in the result given Newcrest’s quarterly numbers in January, which has some wondering whether there may be some more significant news.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs and UBS last raised for Newcrest at $27 a share in February 2009. While the stock has more than halved since, most equity capital markets desks would be happy to consider underwriting a hefty rights issue. As always, it would come down to price.
