This is a good question and an extremely tough one to answer.
My father passed away at 56. The doctors at the time said they did all they could and I now believe talked me out of trying everything possible to keep him alive.
Everyday I have this niggling feeling in the back of my head that if I was stronger at the time he might still be alive.
He had no "known" serious medical issues unlike your family member so circumstances are a bit different, however there must have been something he wasn't telling us or something that was discovered that maybe he didn't know either.
I don't think an autopsy was done so it's one thing I will never know and I will be left wondering what could have been for the rest of my life.
I miss him.
