I am surprised nobody commented on my post about the location of Senegal during earlier geological periods. Perhaps nobody checked, or cared.

OK Senegal was once forming the eastern boundary of the GoM. This was during the period when most of the petroleum generating sourse rocks of the GoM were deposited.

At that time tbe equator was running tbrough central Texas, and also through the present North Sea. There is a strong correlation all over the world of minerals and hydrocarbons being similar where these tectonic plates once were connected.

Just consider Brazil and Nigerian oil, for example. Or the Kimberley and South Australian diamonds. The location of the equator is also imortant whe it comes to carboniferous sediments.
