A good question. As I see it they were losing money at the price of Va at the time and could force the price up by closing Windimurra. That made their SA mines and operations profitable. They did not reckon on the political consequences. They resisted for a very long time but the politics beat them. Anyway that is how I see it at the moment unless you can poke holes it my argument.
