Already, the price in Queensland is estimated at $9.40 a gigajoule.
The surge in the Queensland gas price is forcing gas retailers to look to obtaining increasing volumes of gas from Bass Strait suppliers, where the wholesale price is put at $6.25-$6.50 a gigajoule.
But supplies from Victoria are constrained by a lack of pipeline capacity.
ActewAGL has applied for an 18.6 per cent increase in gas prices in the ACT and Origin Energy is seeking a 20.1 per cent increase in the regulated tariff in its supplier area in southern NSW.
