1. If the wrecker is in possession of an LMCT certificate (a licensed motor vehicle trader) you have guarantee of the seller's ability to pass clear title, irrespective if there is any finance owing on the vehicle.
2. VicRoads has a write off register which will show if the vehicle has ever been declared either a statutory write-off or repairable write-off.
3. Finally, there are commercial enterprises able to provide some detailed history info on the car for a fee, usually under $50. Google appropriate terminology and you'll get a selection.
