Nat le Roux,
Director of The Constitution Society
I joined the Social Anthropology MSc course at UCL in 2007 after working in finance for 25 years. My last job was as Chief Executive of IG Group plc: I took an opportunity to retire early and wanted a change of direction. The Masters programme was a great introduction to a diverse subject matter of which I was largely unaware (my first degree was in Law). It was an opportunity to learn from some inspiring teachers with a very broad range of interests and experiences, and it has helped me to look at economic and political issues from a fresh perspective. This also informs my current work as Director of The Constitution Society, a non-party organisation which works to promote informed debate about constitutional reform in Britain, which I pursue along side various non-executive roles.
My dissertation was on the London Metal Exchange, the last traditional trading floor in Europe. It explored the relationship between rational calculation and social interaction in a particular micro-environment. As an unexpected result of this project I was asked to become an independent director of the Exchange; a job I still do.
Nat le Roux obtained a Distinction on the MSc in Social and Cultural Anthropology in 2008. His dissertation was entitled ‘Holding the Ring: Complexity and Change on the London Metal Exchange’. To see more on Nat’s work with the Constitution Society visit http://www.consoc.org.uk
