BOUGAINVILLE'S Me’ekamui Government’s “new year resolution” is now to seriously remove “soldiers” (de-militarising) manning roadblocks or checkpoints in the region. In a statement issued by the Bougainville Independent Mekamui Government leader Raymond Hakena, the move will be done in conjunction with the Autonomous Bougainville Government. They two have agreed to “destroy and remove” roadblocks within the region as stated in a press statement from Mr Hakena. The statement revealed that both bodies will work together to address the issue of road blocks which are an impediment to development of the region. The road blocks will be demilitarised by the IMG military (MDF) and manned by their community police to control trafficking of homebrew alcohol, weapons and banned substances.
